Jan 30, 2025

Saturday, March 8 – Saturday, April 26, 2025
@ FCCW: 3035 Rosslyn St., LA CA 90065

Feminist Center for Creative Work’s Spring 2025 Artist in Residence is the collective Mahjong Mistress (MM), a community-focused organization centered around the game of mahjong.

In their residency at FCCW, MM will offer mahjong lessons and share the cultural and feminist histories associated with the game. Our community is invited to join MM in building and decorating large-scale tiles that will be exhibited in our space and played in a larger-than-life mahjong game at a culminating party in our garden. Throughout the residency, you’re invited to come into FCCW and hone your mahjong skills at the MM table.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Mahjong Mistress’ practice centers on the ways Mahjong serves as more than just a game—it’s a ritual of connection, storytelling, and empowerment. Rooted in a rich history, Mahjong has long provided women with a space to gather, exchange wisdom, and build resilience across generations.

During the Mahjong Mistress residency at the Feminist Center for Creative Work, we hope to explore how Mahjong fosters bonds beyond the table, creating opportunities for deeper cultural understanding and gameplay. The residency unfolds in two major parts, one in March, one in April, designed to highlight a different facet of Mahjong’s cultural significance.

Through this residency, Mahjong Mistress invites participants to embrace Mahjong not only as a game but also as a tool for storytelling, shared history, and creative collaboration—a reminder of the ways women have always found strength and connection in the spaces they create together.

ABOUT MAHJONG MISTRESS

Founded in 2022, MM was created from the connection between four friends, realized naturally over a table of mahjong. Angela Lin, Abby Wu, Susan Kounlavongsa and Zoe Blue M. desired to bring their love of the game to their friends while also creating a space for people to come together. Through educational and public engagement, large-scale events and private tutoring sessions MM cultivates community in collaboration with other AAPI creatives and organizations. MM aims to create a new generation of mahjong players who all bring their unique points of view and stories to the table.
