Ribbon Skirt Workshop Series
with Badly Licked Bear
Thursdays: June 13 & 20, 10AM–5PM, drop-in at any time
At FCCW:
1800 S Brand Blvd, Suite 111, Glendale, CA 91204
This workshop is open exclusively to queer, two-spirit, and transgender members of the Indigenous community
Free
Queer, Two-Spirit, and transgender members of the Indigenous community are invited to join Culture Bearer, Badly Licked Bear, and learn to make your own ribbon skirts in a guided workshop. Ribbon skirts can be worn for ceremonial or community events, or they can be worn in everyday life, and they can be deeply meaningful in their design or merely reflect the personality of the wearer. Come and learn about ribbon skirts and make your own skirt that you can wear with pride.
All materials and tools will be provided to workshop participants, including fabric and ribbon. No prior sewing skill is required. This workshop will teach basic sewing machine skills, and non-sewers will receive direct assistance from Badly Licked Bear or their assistant. Drop-in any time during workshop hours to participate.
This project provides Indigenous persons who might wear a ribbon skirt for any reason, but who might not have one of their own, know how to make one, or have the resources to make one with the opportunity to make their own skirt. Queer, trans, gender diverse, and Two-Spirit indigenous persons often have reduced access to resources, and may face discrimination within the Indigenous community, itself. The Ribbon Skirt Project is a series of workshops, initiated and partially sponsored by the California Arts Council through the Center for Cultural Power’s Culture Bearer Award.
